What is it? What does it do? Where does it live? These were the basic questions I asked myself as a young boy after discovering a new thing to play with such as a frog, or a snake, or a skink. As a kid, nature was all mine to explore and being outdoors exploring was the natural thing for me to do. And now, as an adult, the child in me still begins each day with a sense of wonder and exploration. Just as the Universe is beyond human comprehension, the intricacies of the earth's systems are equally beyond human understanding. The extent of environmentalism should not only focus on how to mediate human impacts upon the earth's functioning processes, but must include a deeper understanding of these impacts upon human existence and the quality of life for the biosphere. The environmental ethic of a Gaia Ecologist rests upon the principles of deep ecology.
