Just as the Universe is beyond human comprehension, the intricacies of the earth's systems are equally beyond human understanding. The extent of environmentalism should not only focus on how to mediate human impacts upon the earth's functioning processes, but must include a deeper understanding of these impacts upon human existence and the quality of life for the biosphere. The environmental ethic of a Gaia Ecologist rests upon the principles of deep ecology. In order for an environmental paradigm shift to occur a rational act for the preservation of earth's biosphere must begin with the primary premise it's a change in human behavior that precedes an environmental paradigm shift.
